(01) — The story
Granite peaks rising straight out of the Arctic sea, red fishing cabins and a light that never quite goes out in summer.
Lofoten is what happens when mountains forget to stop at the shoreline. The archipelago hangs off Norway’s northern coast like a broken jaw of granite, and every bend of the single coastal road reveals another fjord, another cluster of red rorbu cabins on stilts, another beach so pale it looks tropical until you touch the water.
Why we love it
We travel slowly here: three bases, no more than two hours of driving a day, early hikes to beat the few crowds and late dinners of stockfish in villages whose names you won’t be able to pronounce. In winter, we chase aurora from a heated sauna boat. In summer, the midnight sun turns every ridge into a long golden hour.
